Hugh was born circa 1865 at New Zealand. Hugh was a Fireman.
He married Mary Duncan on 4 March 1887 at the Free Church of England, Moore Street. Hugh, as the father of the bride, attended Ethel May Cairns and James Entwisle Luff's wedding on 29 June 1911.1,2 Hugh was employed as a member of the "Rip Pilot" organisation according to family lore. He was not an actual Pilot as far as I can find but his occupation has been listed as an Engineer and Fireman so he may well have been support staff in the organisation..
Hugh Johnston Cairns died on 27 December 1941 at St Alban's Private Hospital, Palmer Street, Oakleigh, Victoria. He died after two days of Uraemia but had been suffering from chronic heart disease, chronic bronchitis and cardiac failure for various lengths of time. His "usual place of residence" on his Death Certificate was 483 Neerim Road which means that he was resident with "Mama and Papa Gamble" for a period of time.3 His death notice in the The Argus Newspaper, Melbourne, reads as: CAIRNS -On December 27 at private hospital, Oakleigh, Hugh Johnstone Cairns, of 483 Neerim road Murrumbeena relict of the late Mary Cairns and loved brother of Mabel (Mrs H J Gamble of Murrumbeena) aged 76 years -At rest (PAGE 2.) He was buried on 29 December 1941. I am not sure where he was burried at this stage as is listed as "Melbourne General Cemetery - Fawkner" which is unknown by me and Internet searches so far showing no results.3 His estate was probated on 17 April 1942. It was filed with the Supreme Court of Victoria by family friend Duncan Mackinnon a Partner at MacKinnon & Colles of 379 Collins St, Melbourne. The Exacutrix was Mable Gamble, his sister. It shows that, at the time of his death, he was classified as a "Seaman" and had been living at the Gamble home of 483 Neerim Rd, Murrumbeena.
