Eliza Anne Roberts was also known as Eliza Rothey.2 She was born on 10 January 1853 at Hastings, Sussex, England.1,3 She was also shown on some Certificates as Eliza Annie Roffey which was also applied to her parents if mentioned.
Eliza Anne Roberts married Henry Gill, son of Henry Gill and Susan Gurrin, on 2 February 1874 at Old St Pancras Church, London, Middlesex, England. Henry is listed as a Bricklayer at this time. Note that Eliza, through her life, was also referred to as Eliza Anne ROFFEY or ROFE. Both sets of their parents were apparently dead at this time.4,3 Her married name was Gill. Eliza Anne Roberts and Henry Gill immigrated to Adelaide, Australia on 12 February 1874 from London, England.5 Eliza and Henry returned from South Australia to Devonport, England, August 10th 1878. They also have a general domestic servant in Prudence Oliver who is 17 at this time. Henry is listed as a Builder with Partner (46 Men and 1 Boy) so sounds reasonably well off.. Eliza Anne Roberts was also known as Eliza Annie Gill. She and Henry again emigrated from England to Australia in September 1889 aboard the "Iberia" with Captain Chas Adey.      Henry Gill was also known as Harry and occasionally Henry Wyatt. He was born on 24 March 1851 at Dean Street, Crediton, Devon, England, His Birth was registered by his mother on the 2nd of May 1851. She could not sign her name but made a mark (x)..1,2,3,4,5 He and Susan Gurrin lived on 2 May 1851 at Dean Street, Crediton, Devon, England. Henry Gill lived in 1861 at Crediton, Devon, England.3 He lived in 1871 at Crediton, Devon, England.2 He was Brick Layer.
Henry Gill married Eliza Anne Roberts on 2 February 1874 at Old St Pancras Church, London, Middlesex, England. Henry is listed as a Bricklayer at this time. Note that Eliza, through her life, was also referred to as Eliza Anne ROFFEY or ROFE. Both sets of their parents were apparently dead at this time.6,5 Henry Gill and Eliza Anne Roberts immigrated to Adelaide, Australia on 12 February 1874 from London, England.7 "Our Grandparents sailed from London for South Australia on 12th February in 1874 - just ten days after they were marrie at St Pancras Old Church, London. They voyaged to South Australia as assisted passengers on the sailing ship the "Hesperus" of 1770 tons, arriving at Outer Harbour on May 10th 1874 after a voyage of eighty eight days.
The newspaper cutting taken from South Australian Register" of May 11th of that year describes in some detail the events and dramas of the voyage."8
Henry Gill was found on a passenger list on 11 May 1874 at The South Australian Advertiser.
"ARRIVAL OF THE HESPERUS WITH PASSENGERS AND EMIGRANTS.
During the early days of colonisation there were few vessels ready to bring hither the bone and sinew of the colony. The Bucephalaus, Flora, Northern Light. Velocity, Roman
Empire, and a hundred others, brought to our shores the people who have made the colony what it is. And now there comes a ship, owned to a great extent in the colony, which imports fresh hands to develop the industry of our favored land. Under the circumstances of bad weather people do not in general look their very best, but on Sunday afternoon we could not fail to see promising colonists in the new comers, who have been so anxiously looked for during the last days. From the trade classification we find there are carpenters, laborers. masons, miners, smiths, joiners, painters, domestic servants, weavers, cabinetmakers, and several others whose occupation is not properly defined. Dr. Belgrave, the Surgeon-Superintendent, speaks most highly of their conduct during the voyage, dwelling especially on that of the single men, than whom he has never sailed with a better lot, though he has been engaged for a long period sailing in charge of passengers of this class to America. It has been a matter of regret that during the early part of the voyage measles broke out amongst the juveniles, and nine deaths are recorded. There occurred two births, and as a general rule the health of the people has been above the average. This may in a measure be accounted for by the admirable space and ventilation of the ship, for in every way she affords every requisite for the good and comfortable transport of people. As soon as the weather will permit she will be taken into harbor, after Dr. Duncan has concluded his visit of inspection.

An Inquest into the death of Eliza was held by the Coroner, an unknown person on 15 July 1920 at The Morgue, Melbourne, It appears that Lilla was killed at about 6:30pm after arriving at Blackburn Station on the 5:35 train from Melbourne. She needed to cross from North to South across the Level Crossing to proceed home. She waited for the 5:35 to pass when she stepped onto the line and was knocked down by Warburton train going in the opposite direction. She was killed instantly and her left leg was severed above the knee. Dr Richards was sent for and pronounced her dead.
Her husband swore that she was used to the crossing as she travelled once a week to her mother. Further he noted that "she was a little deaf and at times was worse than others".
