Wallace Ingles called her "Mummy May" as she brought him up for a small number of years before being forced out of this role by other members of the family. Family lore has it that Mahala had been lined up to be David Ingles next wife after the death of Jane. However before this could come to be David had died. This would account for why she was close to Wallace for a short while then being forced out. She came to Melbourne in about January 1913, where she died, unmarried, at the relatively young age of 27. Her was commonly known as May. Mahala was born on 24 May 1887 at Oatlands, Tasmania.
Mahala died on 30 June 1914 at Melbourne Hospital at East Melbourne, Victoria, Suppurative Cholangitis at age 27. Although she died in Hospital she was resident at the time, according to her Death Certificate, at "Loyola", Ormond Road, Ascot Vale..
