Thomas Coombs Shapcott was born 0ct 1895 at Barton Regis, Gloucestershire, England. Family lore has it that his name was actually Thomas COOMBS-SHAPCOTT. Later in life when in Australia he dropped using "Coombs", which he considered ostentatious, to become just Thomas Shappcott in daily life. However, fortunately for genealogy, he was always Thomas Coombs Shappcot in official documents.2 He lived in 1901 at 2 Draper Row, Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, He is listed in this census as a son to the Head of the household. He appeared in the English census of 1911 at 360 Hotwell Road, Hotwells, Clifton, Gloucestershire, England, He was listed with an occupation of "Tobacco Factory". At age15 he was listed alongside other household members: Thomas (William Coombs) Shapcott Age42, Annie Shapcott Age44, Nora Shapcott Age26, Amelia Shapcott Age17, Leonard Shapcott Age8..3 He arrived on 24 August 1912 to Sydney, New South Wales.
Thomas Coombs Shapcott enrolled for military service on 3 November 1915 at Melbourne He enrolled as Coombs Thomas Shapcott and declared that he was 21 years and 2 months old, a natural born British Subject and Cigar Maker. His next of kin was Thomas William Shapcott of 61 Rowena Parade, Richmond, Victoria. He signed the declaration as "C.T. Shapcott".
He was of course lying about his age and on 2nd Dec 1915 was discharded for being "under aged and enlisted without parents consent".
Thomas Coombs Shapcott re-applied for military service on 5 February 1916 at 23rd Battalion, Melbourne, Victoria, This time he was accepted as he was 21 years and 4 months. His father was his next of kin, still in Rowena Parade and he disclosed that he had spent 2 years in the Citizen Forces.
Thomas was described as being 5 feet 61/2 inches tall (approx 169 cm), weighing 129 lbs and a chest measurement of 31-33 inches. His complextion was described as "fresh" with blue eyes and brown hair. Thomas was Church of England and not married at this stage.
He was transferred to Bendigo Camp; C Coy, 10th D/Bn presumably for initial training. On the 10th Sep 1916 he left with 23rd Battalion for England where he joined the full 23rd Battalion.4 On 12 November 1916 he was report as being "sick" in Hospital, in the field, France. Then on the 28th of that month he embarked on H.S. Shoreham (?) at Le Havre for England with Trench Feet, arriving in hospital a day later. By the 27th April 1917 he had been cleared and transferred to the 67th Battalion at Windmill Hill, France. [The newly formed 67th Battalion AIF had been formed in England on the 25th April 1917 and assigned to the 17th Infantry Brigade and disbanded 16 September 1917].4
Thomas Coombs Shapcott married Daisy May March on 8 May 1917 at St Michael's Church, Bristol, England. Daisy had been a life-long friend of Thomas' sister "Millie" starting back in Bristol.5 From Private Thomas Shapcott's military records on 19 June 1917: "C Rims Windmill Hill 14.6.'17 Absent Without Leave from 1030 14.6.'17 till 1000 15.6.17. Award Forfeits 1 days pay by Lt Col J/T Flintoff. Total forfeiture 3 days pay RBN 170388/2 15/-."4 Thomas Coombs Shapcott returned to Australia with his wife and child in June 1920 to Victoria.
They arrived aboard the "Konigan Luise" when his son Ronald was only 10 months old. The Australian electoral roll of 1942 has Thomas listed as living at 61 Rowena Parade, Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Thomas had a listed occupation of cigar factory employee. Thomas and Daisy appeared on the Australian electoral roll of 1949 and listed as living at 61 Rowena Parade, Richmond, Victoria, Australia.
