(From a correspondent).
SUDDEN DEATH AND CORONERS INQUEST
A distressing circumstance happened at Kenton Valley, district ofGumeracha on Wednesday morning, the 14th inst., by the sudden death ofBetsy Giddings, a young girl about 17 years of age, daughter ofWilliam Giddings, farmer of the abovenamed place. The deceasedresided with her parents, and on Wednesday morning, in apparent goodhealth, got up at her usual hour, between 6 and 7 o'clock, andprepared breakfast for the family, as was her custom to do so, and satdown with them to partake, but in a few minutes rose and went to herbedroom, from whence she immediately called out to her mother, who, with her father, went and found her with violent pain in her feet andlegs, which in a very short time got into her stomach, causing violentspasms and convultions. A medical man was immediately sent for, butalthough he came within an hour of her first being taken ill, she wasa corpse before his arrival.
Information of the circumstances was given by PT Donnelly to Mr WBRandall, JP, who at once issued his precept to summon a Jury, and holdan inquest on the body forthwith, which was accordingly done in thecourse of the day. The Jury, found that deceased died of cramp in thestomach, terminating in apoplexy, in accordance with the opinion ofthe medical advice present.
On the following day, both PT Donnelly and the father of the deceasedinformed the Coroner that a report was in circulation that deceasedhad been poisoned; on hearing of which he came to the conclusion thatit would be requsite to hold a second inquest, and instructed PTDonnelly to summon another Jury, also another medical man, to attendat 10 o'clock the following morning (Friday 16th), which was doneaccordingly.
The Coroner, after having sworn the Jury and viewed the body, adjourned to the Court-House, Gumeracha, when a number of witnesseswere examined and the inquest patiently prosecuted until after 4 pm,when the Jury found that the said deceased, Betsy Giddings, died ofTetanic spasms caused by strychnine accidentally and unwittinglytaken' and the Jury desire to express in the strongest terms theirdisapprobation at the very careless manner in which so subtle anddangerous a poison has been exposed in the house. Elizabeth Giddings was born in 1843.
Elizabeth Giddings died on 14 September 1859 at Kenton Valley, Hundred of Talunga, Adelaide Hills, SAG.
