Fatal Accident
On Tuesday night at about half-past 10, John (should be George)Giddings, carrier, of Chain of Ponds, was driving his empty wagonalong the North-Eastern-road near Inglewood, when the horses bolted. The people at the Inglewood Inn, hearing the noise, ran out andstopped them and went back to look for the driver, finding him abouthalf a mile distant, with barely perceptible signs of life. A wheelhad passed over one of his temples and crushed into the brain. Theunfortunate man was taken to the inn and Dr Wilkinson sent for, but ina very short time Mr Giddings died. The poor fellows wife died somefew months ago in childbed, and the infant is living. The deceasedwas very much respected. An inquest will be held today.

The South Australian Register, Friday 6 January 1871
Inquest at Inglewood
On the forenoon of Wednesday, 4th January, Dr Wilkinson JP held aninquest at the Inglewood Inn, North-Eastern road to enquire into thedeath of George Giddings. Mr J Longbotham was chosen Foreman. OliverPhilp deposed deceased called at my house, the Morning Star Inn, lastnight about 8 30, with two horses and a wagon. He was perfectlysober. Had one glass of ale only and stopped about two or threeminutes. He said when leaving that he intended to catch his uncle'swagon, so as to have company to Adelaide. When he started he wasstanding on the footboard of the shafts. William Henry Nicholls said- was on the main road about 9.30pm. Saw deceased on his wagon. Heseemed to be trotting very fast. Heard him calling to his horses, trying to stop them. After he passed Mr Brooks gate the horses gotinto a gallop. Deceased was standing in the centre of the shafts, andseemed to have full command. He was holding both reins and pullinghard. There was another wagon in front, and in trying to avoid orpass it the deceased's wagon went on, then up the embankment and againon the road. Do not think deceased's horses sheid. Saw no one passfor half an hour before. Saw deceased afterwards lying on the ground- not moving, but seemed to be breathing very heavily. Went to lifthim and found his head split open; in fact a portion of his brainscame on my hands. Got assistance and removed the body to where it isnow lying. By a Juryman - The horses had bolted. Saw no cause forthe bolt. The skid was not on By another Juryman - It was about fourminutes after the wagon passed that I saw the body. Deceased fell onthe off side of his wagon. The Coroner thought it unnecessary to callfurther evidence, as the cause of death was very clear. SeveralJuryman expressed their esteemfor the deceased, who was known as asteady sober and very industrious young man. Verdict - That thedeceased George Giddings was accidentally killed by falling from theshafts of his wagon through the horses bolting, Great sympathy hasbeen shown by all in the neighbourhood to the bereaved family, MrsGiddings died some three months ago, when her husband was muchaffected and now the climax has been put on the family's sufferings bythis awful event.

TOPICS OF THE DAY
An inquest was held on the 4th January at the Inglewood Inn, before MrWilkinson, JP, and a respectable Jury, upon the body of GeorgeGiddings, farmer, Chain of Ponds, who was found dead upon the mainroad the previous evening. Mr Longbottom having been chosen foreman, the Jury proceeded to view the mutilated corpse; after which, MrNickolls deposed - I was on the main road last night about half-past 9o'clock. Saw the deceased on his waggon. He seemed to be trottingvery fast. Heard him calling out to his horses; it was near MrBrooke's gate. After the waggon passed the gate the horses got into agallop. Deceased was in the centre of the shafts and seemed to havefull command of the horses, holding both reins and pulling hard. There was another waggon in front, and in trying to pass it Gidding'swaggon went down and then up the embankment, and then again on theroad. Do not think that the horses shied. Did not see any onepassing for half an hour before deceased. Saw deceased afterwardslying upon the ground. He was not moving, but seemed to be breathingvery heavily. Went to lift him up, but found his head split open; infact, a portion of the brains came on my hands. Then got assistanceand removed the body to where it is now lying. By a Juror - Never sawany cause for the bolt. The skid was not on. It was about fourminutes after the waggon passed when I saw the body. Deceased fell onthe off side. Oliver Philp, landlord of the Morning Star, identifiedthe body as that of the late George Giddings, and stated deceasedcalled at his home about 20 minutes past 8 o'clock in the evening ofthe accident. He had two horses and a waggon, and was perfectlysober. He had only a glass of ale at witness's house. He stoppedabout two or three minutes. He said when he left he intended to catchhis uncle's waggon to have company to Adelaide. He was standing uponthe footboard of the shaft. The Jury, after a few minutes'consideration, returned the following verdict; - 'That George Giddingswas accidentally killed by falling from the shafts of his team throughthe bolting of his team'. Great sympathy was manifested towards theparents of deceased, as it is only about seven weeks since he buriedhis wife.
