     John Henry Short was also known as Jack. He was born circa 1883 at Wolborough, DevonG.2,1 He appeared in the English census of 1901 at an unknown age he is listed as single and an ordinary Crew Member aboard "HMS Royal Soverein". Of interest is that on 9 November 1901 one of the ship's 6-inch (152 mm) guns exploded, killing one officer and five marines, and injuring another 20 people. His Captain of the time, Captain Charles Henry Adair went on to become an Admiral of the Royal Navy..

     Esme Eileen Short was born on 5 August 1915 at Royal Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh, ScotlandG. She was born whilst the family were living at 1 Assembly Street, Leith.1
Esme Eileen Short died on 3 April 1916. Just before midnight on 2 April 1916 a German Zeppelin dropped 20 bombs on Leith killing 2 people in the first air raid on Scotland.2
