Robert was born on 6 January 1883 at Edinburgh, Scotland. Robert was educated in Scotland. He began military service on 10 May 1902 He had enlisted at "Green Point", Cape Town with the 3rd Railway Pioneer Regiment, 1st Battalion in the Anglo Boer War in South Africa. Green Point is well known also a a POW camp. From his Attestation Form he is listed as 20 years old; of English nationality; presbyterian; a grocer; 5' 10" high; 168lb; chest 37"; fair complexion; grey eys; fair hair and no distinctive marks.
His next of kin is his father , Mr R Ingles of 147 Wellington Street, Launceston Tasmania and he is listed as Single.
The Railway Pioneer Regiments started recruiting on about 18th December 1899 before Lord Roberts commenced his advance from Bloemfontein to Pretoria. Their work was to assist in protecting the railways and to repair bridges, culverts and lines when broken. Without outside assistance the corps of Royal Engineers could not have faced the enormous amount of work naturally falling to their department. From the Railway Pioneer Regiment they received very valuable help. Of such value was the work of the Railway Pioneer Regiment that before the close of the war a fourth battalion had been organised.
The war ended on 31st May 1902. He ended military service on 30 June 1902; This was a month after the end of the Anglo Boer War. His attestation form lists him as a Private of Very Good Character having served 52 days. However under Crimes and Awards on 13th May 1902 he was charged with "losing Kit + Equipment through neglect, in the value of 2 pounds four shillings and a penny farthing". This was removed from his pay. The reason for his discharge was simply disbandonment of his unit. His address after discharge was 147 Wellington Street, Launceston Tasmania. A short military career with a larger one to follow.
He married Laura Anne Smith in 1907 at Tasmania. Robert Ingles (III) began military service on 10 September 1916 He joined the AIF, 12th Battalion enlisting in Claremont Tasmania. His Attestation Paper noted he had seen 16 months in S. Africa.
He seemed to be in good health and was shipped out to war as an Acting Sargent. On arrival he reverted to other ranks and was selected for special training in "bombing". After this he underwent further bombing training to become a Bombing trainer. By "bomb" I suggest that we are talking about "Mills bombs" or now handgrenades.1 He ended military service on 31 January 1918 He was "Returned to Australia per "A" 8 for Discharge. (OLD. V.D.H. Rheumatism)" VDH means valvular disease of the heart.
He returned home to his wife Laura who died in 1923.1
He married Margaret Stewart.
Robert died on 10 October 1940 at Launceston, Tasmania, at age 57.
