He married Ann Prince on 28 July 1814 at Edgebaston Parish Church, Edgebaston, Warwickshire, England. Thomas migrated by himself to Australia leaving in October 1853 and arriving in Melbourne onboard the good ship "Birmingham", on 1st Jan 1854, where he worked for a short while.
He then went to the goldfields at Ballarat where he was successful and finally, returning to Melbourne, he founded a firm in approximately 1855 as a metal maker and die sinker. This was at 15 Mincing Lance, West Melbourne, (between King Street and William Street, Off Flinders Street). Here he manufactured penny tokens.
In 1860 he moved to 100 Collins Street East where he remained until 1882. This site was just up hill from the Town Hall.
In 1872 he went into partnership with a Mr Martin under the name of Stokes & Martin and in 1882 the firm moved to Clarence Terrace, North Fitzroy.
In 1886 they moved again to 26 Little Collins Street, Melbourne and then again in 1890 to Caledonean Lane , which was destroyed by fire. Following this the partnership was dissolved and the firm then became Stokes & Sons, which was incorporated in 1910 as Stokes and Sons Pty Ltd. They moved to Brunswick in 1935 and the factory is presently situated at Ringwood.
Thomas died on 4 January 1861 at England at age 72.
