He married Mary Ann Weaver on 8 August 1847 at Kempsey, Worcester, England. At the time of his death Philip Baylis was noted as a thatcher. at Deniliquin, NSW. Philip died on 9 February 1904 at the local Hospital, Deniliquin, New South Wales. He was aged 87 and had spent 18 years in NSW which indicates that he arrived here in approximately 1886. By the time of his death both Thomas and Emily had predeceased him.. He was buried on 10 February 1904 at Deniliquin, New South Wales. On the death certificate of his son Philip, his occupation was listed as "Husbandman", which is an unusual term. A Husbandman in England in the medieval and early modern period was a free tenant farmer or small landowner. The social status of a husbandman was below that of a yeoman. The earliest recorded use of the term dates from the Hebrew bible in the book of Genesis. The sense of husband in this term is that of the "master of house" rather than "married man".
